Celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2007, the City Market is home to an eclectic mix of restaurants and merchants who offer distinctive gifts, flowers, home accessories and specialty foods from across the world. As Kansas City's oldest continuously-operating business, The City Market has been approximately in the same location since 1857. Leased by the City to Jacob and Fred Scheibel for $50 a year, the Market area quickly became a trading post area for those heading west.
The City Market buildings were updated in 1986 and totally renovated in 1990 with over $14.5 million in public and private funds. Additional dollars were committed to energize the greater River Market neighborhood. Today, shoppers can enjoy nearly 100,000 square feet of restaurants, food-related shops, retail and museum exhibit space, including the Arabia Steamboat Museum in the City Market's east building. Antique pedestrian and interior lighting, statues, planters and 843 free parking spaces within the City Market public square has made the location a lively destination visited by over 600,000 annually. Annual events at the City Market include the Berry Festival in June, the Tomator Festival in July, the Art of the Machine on Sundays, the Corn Festival in August, the Melon Festival in September, the City Market Harvest Festival in October, and Holiday Festival in December.
