Country Club Plaza 47th & J.C. Nichols Blvd. 816-753-0100 Kansas City Front Page is a weekly news publication, with daily updates, spotlighting attractions, events, business and hospitality in Kansas City. |
The Country Club Plaza was developed by J. C. Nichols in 1922 as the nation's first suburban shopping district. Today shoppers enjoy a variety of upscale boutiques, department stores, restaurants and hotels throughout the 14-block area. Fountains, sculptures and murals have created more of a urban cultural district with magnificent European works of art and majestic architecture inspired by the colorful moods of Spain, Italy, Portugal and Morocco. During the depressions, the Plaza Art Fair was started as a promotion to draw shoppers to the area. Seventy six years later, the Plaza Art Fair thrives today as the Midwest's premier art fair, featuring nearly 250 nationally-recognized artists, and drawing a crowd of almost 300,000 annually. The Kansas City Power and Light Season of Lights kicks off Thanksgiving evening at the 77th Annual Plaza Lighting Ceremony. This year will honor a Kansas City Trio of Traditions, the Plaza Lights, Chiefs Football and Kansas City Jazz.
