Free Census goodies, prizes and surprises also will be available. Bridge Construction Beginning In A Big Way KANSAS CITY, MO, (kansascityfrontpage.com), March 31, 2010 - As the weather improves in the coming weeks, bridge replacement and rehabilitation projects as part of the Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program will begin popping up all across the state, and that means motorists should prepare for road closures and detours. More than 200 bridges are scheduled for work this year, and in almost all cases, the bridges will be closed during construction to lower the cost and allow for speedy completion. Replacing the bridges in their current locations greatly reduces the need for additional right of way and costly roadway work, enabling more bridges to be improved within the project's $700 million budget. In all, Safe & Sound will improve or replace 802 of the state's poorest bridges. Most of the bridges being constructed in 2010 - about 150 - will be complete replacements as part of MoDOT's design-build contract with KTU Constructors. KTU has set up regional offices in Lee's Summit, Bethany, Chillicothe, Sedalia and Benton to coordinate this year's work that will take place primarily in northwest and west central Missouri, the Kansas City area and the Bootheel. KTU's projects, by contract, are to last an average of 45 days - or half as long as the typical bridge replacement. To help motorists stay abreast of the construction schedule and to navigate around these projects, MoDOT has created an interactive Web map that includes suggested detour routes, project details and schedule information - http://safeandsoundmap.modot.mo.gov/sas.htm. The color-coded map shows bridges that are under construction, those that have been completed, those that are to begin within three months, those that are to start in the next year, and those that are scheduled for construction in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Swope Health South Clinic Site Announced KANSAS CITY, MO, (kansascityfrontpage.com), March 31, 2010 - The City of Kansas City, Mo., in partnership with Swope Health Services and the Local Investment Commission, announced the selection of a site for a new clinic today in south Kansas City. The Swope Health South Clinic will be located at 8821 Troost Ave. "This is a monumental day. We have all been working towards this goal since I was in the state legislature, meeting with community partners to plan a clinic south of 75th Street, to address health needs in the Southland," said Councilwoman Cathy Jolly, 6th District at large and co-chair for the Health Commission. "It is very gratifying to take this step towards opening that clinic, and to know that because of the passing of the health care reform bill, more funding for clinics of this type will be made available." The selected site was among 33 reviewed by a selection committee made up of representatives from LINC; the City of Kansas City, Mo., Health Department; and Swope Health Services. The selection committee considered a variety of factors, including health indicators, transportation, accessibility and a feasibility study conducted by LINC. "The selection committee put a great deal of effort into assuring that all options were considered," said Dr. Rex Archer, director of the Health Department. "We know that there are many areas of need, and this clinic is a great first step in reaching one of those areas. We are now beginning the planning process for the next clinic site." The Swope Health South Clinic will be funded in part by a $320,000 grant from the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City, with another $200,000 provided by the City. The remainder of the funding for the clinic is expected to come from Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements and copayments. |
