KANSAS CITY NEWS TODAY - Monday, April 5, 2010 Youth Advocacy Office Announces Scholarships KANSAS CITY, MO, (kansascityfrontpage.com), April 5, 2010 - The City of Kansas City, Mo., Youth Advocacy Office, a division of the City Manager's Office, will help administer a 10-year scholarship grant program funded by the Port Authority of Kansas City, Mo., and area casino gaming operators. The scholarship will serve City of Kansas City, Mo., residents living in households that have a total annual income of 80 percent or less of the median income of city households. Scholarship applicants also must be between 17-25 years old, pursuing educational opportunities at an accredited or certified college, university and vocational/technical school and have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. The scholarships will provide a minimum of $1,000 per academic year and can be used for tuition, books, room and board and activity fees. Scholarship applications, along with a high school transcript or GED certificate, a 300-word essay, a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, employer or clergy member and the most recent IRS tax forms of all members of the household are due by May 1 of each year. AYS' Stack the Decks Casino Night Fundraiser KANSAS CITY, MO, (kansascityfrontpage.com), April 5, 2010 - On Friday, April 23, 2010, Associated Youth Services (AYS) will host Stack the Decks Casino Night 2010 at the Overland Park Convention Center from 7:30 PM to 11:30 PM. The annual casino-night fundraiser supports the non-profit's five programs aimed at assisting underprivileged youth in crisis. "Stack the Decks Casino Night will provide a glamorous evening of activities reminiscent of a night on the Las Vegas Strip: blackjack, poker, craps, and roulette casino games are sure to keep guests trying their hand at lady luck," event organizers said. For those who want to bid on great prizes, silent and live auctions will give guests the chance to take home everything from a KU basketball signed by the team to a hot air balloon ride package. Stack the Decks includes a DJ, specialty drinks, and hors d'oeuvres. Kansas City Bright Future Employment Fair KANSAS CITY, MO, (kansascityfrontpage.com), April 5, 2010 - The Bright Future Employment Fair provides part-time and full-time summer employment, internships and pre-apprenticeships for Greater Kansas City residents, minimum age of 16. The fair is from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 17 at Kansas City Convention Center, 301 W. 13th St. (Attendance at the employment fair does not guarantee employment.) Minimum Summer employee wage: $7.25 per hour. Positions and hours vary based on employer and funding mechanism. To attend the fair you must submit an employment application. You can fill out and submit the application online, print the form, complete and mail it in, or complete and submit the application onsite. The application deadline is April 12. Once your application and all others are submitted to the Youth Advocacy Office, only selected candidates will receive an e-mail regarding the next steps in the process. Kansas City Ranks 18th on List KANSAS CITY, MO, (kansascityfrontpage.com), April 5, 2010 - U-Haul International, Inc. released results of the annual U-Haul National Migration Trend Report that reflects the nation's top growth areas for families that moved during 2009. The 2009 Top U.S. Growth Cities Report indicates that for cities with more than with 5,000 families moving, Bronx, N.Y. had the highest percentage of growth, with 17.22 percent. Kansas City ranked 18th with 2.02 percent and St. Louis ranked 12th, with 5.37 percent. "The report, reflective of growth patterns in the United States during 2009, was compiled based on nationwide trends in cities of all sizes and reflects communities with more than 5,000 families moving in or out of the area," stated John "J.T." Taylor, U-Haul president of Phoenix Operations. "Growth cities were then determined by calculating the percentage of inbound moves vs. outbound moves for each area." The 2009 Top U.S. Growth Cities Report was compiled from more than 1 million U-Haul one-way truck transactions between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2009. |
