The three-year project includes replacing the Paseo Bridge with the Christopher S. Bond Bridge - a new landmark, cable-stay Missouri River crossing. The kcICON Project will reconstruct/rehabilitate about four miles of the highway from just north of Route 210/Armour Road to the northeast corner of the downtown Kansas City, Mo. freeway loop. Work starting this month will focus on three primary areas - along southbound at Armour Road and between the Front Street and Oak Street interchanges, and along northbound between Levee Road and Bedford Avenue. On the south end of the project limits, crews will be restriping lanes and setting up concrete barriers in preparation for moving southbound traffic to the outside and performing asphalt widening work along the inside lanes. Lane restriping and median barrier removal work will take place along northbound I-29/35 between Levee Road and asphalt paving work along the southbound lanes at Armour Road. Additional work in the Armour Road interchange will include relocating utilities, removing a center median barrier and installing a temporary traffic signal along Armour Road and putting down temporary asphalt to provide an alternate route during the closure of the westbound Armour Road off-ramp from southbound I-29/35. This off-ramp is scheduled to close in mid-May along with the westbound Armour Road on-ramp to southbound I-29/35. All lanes on I-29/35 will remain open during the peak travel hours of 6 to 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. and the Paseo Bridge will remain open to traffic throughout construction. However, motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes if possible.
