City staff, community organizations and advocacy groups have collaborated on a variety of activities that promote the use of the bicycle and walking as effective alternatives for transportation, in addition to health and recreational purposes. This year's Greater Kansas City Bike Week activities include: workshops on bike repair and riding safety, morning bike-commute rest stops, "Bike-In" movie events, and group rides for all skill levels. The activities begin Sunday, May 16, with the inaugural Sunday Parkways event on Kansas City's historic Cliff Drive. To accommodate the event, Cliff Drive and Gladstone Boulevard will be closed to cars and transformed into an open street festival where people can bike, run, walk, rollerblade or walk their dogs. Sunday Parkways is a family-friendly event that will include live music, bike tune-ups, dancers, and more. Mayor Mark Funkhouser and City Council members will be on hand to officially kick off Bike Week festivities. Opportunities and resources are available for bicyclists of all skill levels to ride while having fun and meeting new people. If you're a beginning cyclist, Bike Week offers many chances to learn about bike transportation, safety tips, commuting by bike, proper traffic laws and more. "When residents choose to bike instead of drive, they reduce traffic congestion, help keep the air clean and improve their personal health," said Deb Ridgway, the City's bicycle and pedestrian coordinator. "The savings on fuel and vehicle maintenance cost can be substantial when a resident chooses to be a bicyclist rather than a motorist." Bike Week is a regional effort involving local governments, area bicycle clubs and advocacy groups, planning agencies and bike-friendly businesses.
