KANSAS CITY NEWS TODAY - Tuesday, June 10, 2008 Tax Rebate Payments May Not Stimulate Economy As Female Consumers Cut Spending KANSAS CITY, (PRNewswire), June 10, 2008 - Women are cutting their spending due to worry over the economy, and the Economic Stimulus Package checks currently being mailed out may not be enough to help according to a recent survey of 831 female consumers by CoolSavings.com According to the survey, 93 percent of women indicated they are worried about their family's finances/budget because of the economy and are cutting spending as a result. Only the 55-year-old and over demographic felt slightly less concerned (84 percent) than the remaining 18-54 year-old respondents, of which the 25-34 year-old group was the most worried at nearly 97 percent. Restaurant dining tops the list of areas where women are cutting back the most (24 percent), followed by energy costs such as gasoline, heating and air conditioning (17 percent), groceries (17 percent), entertainment, which includes books, movies, music, theatre, concerts, sports, electronics (16 percent), and clothes (11 percent). When asked how much money was saved in the last three months from cutting back on that one category, the majority (34 percent) stated $50-$99, while 29 percent said $0-$49, and another 27 percent reported $100-$249. Even when it comes to personal indulgences -- the things consumers supposedly can't live without -- it seems no area is immune to cost-cutting during trying times. When asked which personal indulgence they spend money on regardless of the economy, 50 percent of women reported "none" followed distantly by those who refused to cut back on alcohol/tobacco (12%) and special restaurant meals (10%). "As the primary shopper who controls upwards of 70 percent of their household's discretionary budget, women are clearly concerned about their families in today's economy, and they're looking to cut costs across many areas of their budget," stated Matt Wise, president and chief executive of Q Interactive, the company that owns CoolSavings.com. "CoolSavings is committed to easing the burden on families by enabling consumers to shop smarter through coupons and savings from trusted name-brands, comparison shopping and expert advice." Gov. Blunt Signs Legislation Encouraging Donations for Breast Cancer Services KANSAS CITY, (kansascityfrontpage.com), June 10, 2008 - Matt Blunt has signed legislation encouraging donations for breast cancer services for Missouri women. "Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women and that is why I have worked to ensure that Missouri is continuously working to encourage, educate and support all women by advocating breast cancer awareness," Gov. Blunt said. "I am honored to sign this legislation illustrating that our state values the contributions of women to our homes, careers, communities and state. "Like many Missouri families, my family was touched by breast cancer, when we lost my mother to the disease. Close to four thousand Missouri women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. It is for them and the countless survivors we work to spread awareness about breast cancer," Mrs. Blunt said. "Senate Bill 1105, sponsored by Sen. Maida Coleman, creates a check-off on the Missouri individual and corporate income tax forms for contributions to the breast cancer awareness fund. Donations will be used by the Friends of the Missouri Women's Council for breast cancer services. "Last year Gov. Blunt championed and secured a $500,000 increase to expand the number of breast and cervical cancer screenings through the Show Me Healthy Women Program. In addition this year, he secured an additional $500,000 increase, bringing the total increase to a substantial $1 million total. The Show Me Healthy Women program offers free breast and cervical cancer screenings to thousands of Missouri women who meet specific residency, age and income guidelines. "Mrs. Blunt is an advocate of promoting breast cancer awareness. She serves as spokesperson and honorary chair for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Mid-Missouri Affiliate and is committed to encouraging Missouri women to take time for breast cancer screenings and to promoting breast cancer research and awareness.
