LOUIS, MO, (kansascityfrontpage.com), June 17, 2010 - The Kansas City District, Corps of Engineers, is proposing to repair the stilling basin October 2010 through early spring 2012 at the Truman Lake Dam located near Warsaw, Mo. "The repairs would be conducted under operations and maintenance authority in compliance with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act," said project biologist Richard Skinker. Skinker said that construction materials testing would be initiated in July 2010. The stilling basin is located adjacent to the Bledsoe Ferry Recreation Area. Skinker said the recreation within the Bledsoe Area and adjacent to the stilling basin would be temporarily impacted as the north/northwestern portion of the Bledsoe Area would be closed during construction for public safety. The Bledsoe Ferry boat ramp would also be used periodically by the construction contractor. "The October 2010 Heritage Days will continue as planned and construction will halt during those days but other seasonal events may be impacted," said Skinker. Budweiser Kicks in for Hispanic Scholarship Fund ST. LOUIS, MO, (kansascityfrontpage.com), June 13, 2010 - For each goal scored during the FIFA World Cup™ that started Friday in South Africa, Anheuser-Busch and Budweiser will donate $500 to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF), up to $100,000. This is the latest in Anheuser-Busch's longtime support of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. The company began supporting the HSF in 1982. "Anheuser-Busch has long appreciated the Latino community, and HSF has been fortunate to have been a partner - through which A-B can give back to their loyal customers," said Frank Alvarez, President and CEO of HSF. "A degree in every U.S. Latino household is the mission of HSF, and we extend our appreciation to A-B for bringing HSF to the world's largest viewing audience at this year's FIFA World Cup." Alvarez said money from Anheuser-Busch will help support HSF scholars who attend nearly 2,000 colleges and universities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. "During the past three decades, more than 20,000 students have received an education because of Anheuser-Busch and Budweiser's support of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund," said Margarita Flores, senior director of community relations at Anheuser-Busch and a member of the board of directors for HSF. "Each goal during the tournament will be a reason to cheer because these donations help the HSF deliver support to students who need it the most - students who otherwise could not realize their dream of a college education." Anheuser-Busch has been the largest corporate contributor in fundraising efforts for HSF, with the company and its 600 wholesalers nationwide contributing more than $24 million since 1982. The Budweiser FIFA World Cup™ program this summer continues this support. Budweiser has been a FIFA World Cup™ partner since 1986. The 2010 FIFA World Cup is Budweiser's seventh consecutive tournament as a major event sponsor, underscoring the brand's commitment to soccer. Budweiser also is an official sponsor of Major League Soccer and will continue its support of the FIFA World Cup in 2014. Celebrating its 35th year, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund has awarded over $300 million resulting in close to 100,000 scholarships to students in need. For more information, please see HSF.net. More Cities Cut Bottled Water Spending KANSAS CITY, MO, (kansascityfrontpage.com), June 13, 2010 - The U.S. Conference of Mayors released the preliminary findings from an ongoing national survey demonstrating that more and more cities are phasing out bottled water from city budgets. These initial findings come on the heels of an executive order by Colorado Governor Bill Ritter cutting state spending on the bottle. Four states, including New York, Illinois, and Virginia, have now taken such action. "These actions are not just about fiscal responsibility, they are about civic pride and protecting common resources," said Leslie Samuelrich, Corporate Accountability International Chief of Staff. "Spending taxpayer dollars on bottled water sends the wrong message about our nation's high quality tap water. It is also entirely wasteful to spend scarce public dollars on such a non-essential use of our most essential public resource." The survey was prompted by an earlier resolution encouraging cities to phase out bottled water spending. Up to 40 percent of bottled water, in fact, comes from the same source as the tap. Bottled water is also far less regulated. Yet bottled water marketing has been so effective that many U.S. cities responsible for delivering tap water to the public have been spending millions each year on the bottle - even as public water systems face a $22 billion annual shortfall. The survey found that out of 101 cities responding: -- 72 percent have considered eliminating or reducing bottled water purchases within city facilities; -- 45 percent sited "promoting public water" as the reason for taking action; and -- 44 percent have taken action to phase out city purchases and use of bottled water. U.S. Conference of Mayors staff has said they will continue to gather responses from their membership in the coming weeks to capture a fuller picture of city action on this issue. For the last four years Corporate Accountability International's national education and action campaign, Think Outside the Bottle, has worked with public officials, communities of faith, campus administrators, small businesses, and individuals to support public water systems and call on the bottled water industry to honor local control of water and be more transparent about its labeling and water quality. City Seeks Applications for Neighborhood Improvements KANSAS CITY, MO, (kansascityfrontpage.com), June 13, 2010 - Last week the City Council adopted Resolution #100446 that allocated supplemental funds, to be managed by the Public Improvements Advisory Committee (PIAC) process, for neighborhood level improvements. The City of Kansas City, Mo. is immediately instituting a pilot program to fast track a portion of those funds to go to neighborhood improvements which can be started this year. This pilot program will allow an immediate benefit for neighborhoods, and will allow for the immediate creation of jobs, one of the main reasons given for making supplemental funds available. "The City is currently targeting a portion of the total $24 million available for this pilot program," said Pat Klein, Capital Improvements Program manager. "We are seeking applications immediately and expect to move through a very short time frame to approve some of those projects to begin this fall." "We are asking for neighborhood supporters to help," said Mayor Mark Funkhouser. "Look around your neighborhood for small, easily completed projects that involve city assets. It may be sidewalks, curbs and gutters, catch basins, traffic signals, crosswalks or park improvements. Look for those projects which, if completed, could give the biggest improvement for the lowest cost." Residents who find a project(s) they would like to apply for can go on-line to www.kcmo.org where the application is posted, or contact Rose Rhodes at 816-513-1322. The deadline to apply for these pilot supplemental funds is June 23, 2010. We will have our normal PIAC hearing process starting June 17th. The PIAC Board is expected to meet in mid-July to consider these pilot applications and choose which projects to fund. Projects that are not chosen to be funded in this pilot program will be held for consideration in the normal PIAC fund process when the balance of the supplemental funding has been exhausted. The deadline for PIAC applications for new projects will be August 31, 2010. |
