KANSAS CITY, MO, (kansascityfrontpage.com), August 26, 2009 - "For too long, theft of vehicle license plate tabs has caused inconvenience for Missouri motorists and nuisances for Missouri police departments. But with our theft-resistant tabs pilot program, Missouri is taking an important step toward limiting this crime," Gov. Nixon said. "By printing license numbers on the tabs, thieves will have less incentive to steal tabs, and police will be able to more easily identify stolen tabs that are being used illegally." The theft-resistant tab program makes several changes to vehicle license tabs. The primary change is the inclusion of the vehicle's individual license plate number in bold text on the tab. Tabs stolen from one vehicle and affixed to another will be clearly identifiable as stolen to law enforcement, as the numbers on the tab and license plate will not match. Additionally, the enhanced tabs will be pre-perforated and embedded with a watermark, making them difficult to remove from plates or to counterfeit. Gov. Nixon was joined for the announcement of the theft-resistant tabs program by acting Director of the Department of Revenue, Alana Barragán-Scott and Chief Daniel Isom of the St. Louis Police Department. License tab theft has been particularly problematic in the city of St. Louis, and the tab initiative has been targeted in St. Louis for its pilot period. Gov. Nixon's announcement was made, Friday, August 21, at the Schlafly Branch of the St. Louis Public Library, home to a parking garage in an area of St. Louis where many license tab thefts have historically been concentrated. "Both St. Louis residents and visitors to our great city have been affected in recent years by the increasing number of license tabs stolen from parked vehicles," Chief Isom said. "It is my hope that this new program will help reduce the number of license tab thefts and ultimately lift a significant burden off the citizens in our community." The pilot program will make the new theft-resistant tabs available to Missourians who renew their registration via the Missouri Online Renewal System (MORE), those who renew by mail, or those who visit the central license office at 301 W. High St., Room 370, in Jefferson City. In addition to reducing theft of tabs, the program will also help make license offices more efficient, as license tabs in the pilot locations will be printed on demand, ending the need for offices to keep an inventory of tabs on hand. "Making theft-resistant tabs available at St. Louis license offices and online is just one example of how we're trying to make state government more efficient and accessible," Gov. Nixon said.
KANSAS CITY, MO, (kansascityfrontpage.com), August 26, 2009 - In a move that stands to create jobs, boost local economies, improve aging water infrastructure and protect human health and the environment for the people of Missouri, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded $146,503,800 to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. This new infusion of money provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 will help the state and local governments finance many of the overdue improvements to water projects that are essential to protecting public health and the environment. "This funding will go a long way toward fixing aging infrastructure in urban and rural communities in Missouri," said William Rice, acting regional administrator. "Clean water is essential for both healthy communities and healthy local economies. These funds will help fix aging infrastructure and provide good-paying jobs." The Recovery Act funds will go to the state's Clean Water and Drinking Water State Revolving Fund programs. The Clean Water State Revolving Fund program will receive $108,641,800. It provides low-interest loans for water quality protection projects for wastewater treatment, non-point source pollution control, and watershed and estuary management. The Drinking Water State Revolving Fund program will receive $37,862,000. It provides low-interest loans for drinking water systems to finance infrastructure improvements. Jay Nixon recently congratulated a Kansas City organization that has been given national recognition for its support of employees who serve in the National Guard or Reserve. The Mid America Kidney Stone Association was one of 15 employers nationwide that recently received the 2009 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. "As employers and as Americans, we should give our full support to our Reservists and members of the National Guard, who have stepped forward for our country," Gov. Nixon said. "The Mid America Kidney Stone Association has demonstrated unwavering support for this effort and serves as an outstanding example for all employers to emulate, and I congratulate the Association and its staff on this national award." According to information from ESGR (Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve), "the Mid America Kidney Stone Association is comprised of just 10 employees and supports its Guard and Reserve members by providing differential pay between deployed employees' military pay and regular salary; continuing deployed employees' medical and life insurance benefits; maintaining communication with deployed employees and their families and offering support; sending care packages routinely to deployed employees; and providing a Reservist employee with the means to continue higher education and take advanced training." "Employers across Missouri, both large and small, are standing behind their employees who are in the Guard and Reserve, and they deserve our thanks," the Governor said. "Without employer support, the job of the National Guard and the Reserve would be much more difficult." The Freedom Award will be presented to the Mid America Kidney Stone Association at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 17. |
