KANSAS CITY NEWS TODAY - Friday, September 12, 2008 KC Youth Office Certified to Give National Volunteer Award KANSAS CITY, MO, (SLFP.com), September 12, 2008 - Youth Advocacy Office, a division of the City Manager's Office, was recently certified by the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation to give the President's Volunteer Service Award. The award has multiple levels (gold, silver and bronze) depending on the number of volunteer hours accumulated in the one-year period and the size of the group or age of volunteers. The one-year accumulation period will run from Sept. 1 to Aug. 31 each year. "The Youth Advocacy Office is proud to join the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation in recognizing the volunteers who consistently give their time to make a difference in the lives of others," said Thalia Cherry, youth advocate manager for the Youth Advocacy Office. To qualify for the President's Volunteer Service Award, volunteers must submit a record of their service hours to Youth Advocacy Office for verification. Volunteer service hours are not limited to those performed on behalf of the City or the Youth Advocacy Office. Bush created the President's Volunteer Service Award in 2003 to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers make in communities across the country. TimesTwoKC Helps Local Parents Stretch Back-to-School Budgets Overland Park, KS, (SLFP.com), September 12, 2008 - TimesTwoKC, a semi-annual children's consignment sale, invites Kansas City parents to clean out their children's closets of items that no longer fit, and replace them with affordable brand new and gently used items. The fall sale is coming to the Overland Park Convention Center, September 16-18. Consigners sell items including clothing, baby equipment, strollers, and nursery furniture. Items should be priced, tagged, and delivered to the Overland Park Convention Center on Sunday, September 14 from 3:00pm to 9:00pm and Monday, September 15 from 9:00am to 2:00pm. There is no consigner fee. Consigners earn 65% of the profits from the sale. Unsold items are returned to consignors or donated to local charities including Advice and Aid Pregnancy Centers, and Operation Breakthrough. The sale is staffed by volunteers from the community. In return for their service, volunteers receive early shopping privileges and 75% of their sales. Consigners and volunteers can register online at www.timestwokc.com. PE4life Kansas City Summit to Focus on Improving the Health and Well Being of Local Children KANSAS CITY, MO, (SLFP.com), September 12, 2008 - Businesses, foundations, school leaders and parents interested in combining efforts to combat childhood obesity and inactivity among area students are invited to attend the PE4life Kansas City Summit: Connecting School Needs with Community Resources on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Jewish Community Center, 5801 West 115th Street, Overland Park, Kan.
